The Light of Days by Judy Batalion6/27/2023 They flirted with German soldiers, bribed them with wine, whiskey, and home cooking, used their Aryan looks to seduce them, and shot and killed them. With courage, guile, and nerves of steel, these “ghetto girls” paid off Gestapo guards, hid revolvers in loaves of bread and jars of marmalade, and helped build systems of underground bunkers. Witnesses to the brutal murder of their families and neighbors and the violent destruction of their communities, a cadre of Jewish women in Poland-some still in their teens-helped transform the Jewish youth groups into resistance cells to fight the Nazis. One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who became resistance fighters-a group of unknown heroes whose exploits have never been chronicled in full, until now. Also on the USA Today, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Globe and Mail, Publishers Weekly, and Indie bestseller lists.

Dr caroline leaf books6/26/2023 The Secret claims that if we understand we’re all energy, one with the universe and its power, then we can leverage that power to create or receive anything we want with our thoughts. It’s even something that many preachers over the years have sold to us in various guises, like hyper-faith, name it and claim it, sowing your seed. Let’s be honest, we’ve probably all, at some point, indulged someone telling us that we just need to think positive or visualise our goal and it will be ours. You can have that same success too if you buy their book or attend their seminar, or sign up to be part of their network marketing scheme. We’ve all heard of the book or the movie, or the countless gurus that promote how they’ve made millions of dollars and found untold happiness by unlocking the power of the Law of Attraction. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the decade, “The Secret” is no secret.

Nomadland bruder6/26/2023 Originally planned as an article for The New York Times, Nomadland beautifully reveals the lives of the ever-increasing number of Nomads across America. Working low paid temporary jobs into their traditional retirement years due to the economic crash and soaring house prices they persist as America’s forgotten community. Nomadland tells the story of travelling American Nomads who live in vans, renovated school buses and RVs across the United States. “When I first read Jessica Bruder’s book I was so impressed by what she has captured of the baby boomer generation and what the world meant to them” Chloé Zhao “As I write this, they are scattered across the country-” Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-winning, Nomadland is one of my all-time favourite movies, so naturally, when I heard it was based on the nonfiction book by Jessica Bruder, I jumped at the opportunity to read it. The book that inspired Chloé Zhao’s masterpiece is one of the finest pieces of journalism of all time and a work of art in its own right.

Glorious Day by Skye Kilaen6/26/2023 She’s strong and devoted to those who she cares about it and I liked following the narrative from her point of view. Elsenna doesn’t expect to leave this fight alive. We follow Vice-Captain Hazen as she has to face princess again, all while the tension in the nation increases. Her regret for things she had to do as a guard and strong feelings for a person she doesn’t think she deserves are driving her actions throughout ‘Glorious Day’. Skye Kilaen’s ‘Glorious Day’ follows Elsenna as she navigates her job as a Vice-Captain Hazen, helping the rebels planning to overthrow the current King and her feelings for a princess who she hasn’t spoken to in a long time. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for my e-ARC.

Garden spells allen6/25/2023 For nearly a decade, 34-year-old Claire Waverley, at peace with her family inheritance, has lived in the house alone, embracing the spirit of the grandmother who raised her, ruing her mother’s unfortunate destiny and seemingly unconcerned about the fate of her rebellious sister, Sydney, who freed herself long ago from their small town’s constraints. There, an apple tree bearing fruit of magical properties looms over a garden filled with herbs and edible flowers that possess the power to affect in curious ways anyone who eats them. Ariadne by jennifer saint6/25/2023 In her feminist reimagining of Ariadne’s tale, Saint hands over narrative agency to princess Ariadne and her sister Phaedra, instead of the better known heroes like Theseus and the god Dionysus whose lives got intertwined with those of the two sisters’. If you are familiar with the ancient Greek myths and legends, you might know Ariadne as the traitorous daughter of King Minos who betrayed her family and kingdom, and helped the Athenian prince Theseus kill the Minotaur, a monster who was her own brother. Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne is a retelling of the story of the Cretan princess Ariadne, a well-known figure from the Greek myths. |
